History Be Damned
It seems to me that every day brings in a surprise for everyone. And even for those who live a simple but planned life, it is unexpected to see surprises or relive a moment or two.
I’m usually aware of whats coming my way or I’m usually somewhat capable of predicting what is about to happen in my life. That’s something a lot of us would love to be able to say. And if we can all pretend that there is always a possibility of something new can happen or for history to repeat itself.. in my case.. it’s usually the history repeating because, whether it’s planned or unplanned, we all can manage to do something we have already done before. Sometimes it turns out to be one of those wonderful things that leaves a feeling of accomplishment and joy. But sometimes it’s the one thing you hoped you never have to deal with again. Good or bad, history tends to leave its mark on every individual. Sometimes more than once.
It is an old saying that history repeats itself. If that is true then everything should be predictable and possibly trackable . But if that is true, then why is it that human race has not been able to change the flow of the events that take place every day? Why are we not able to prevent some of those preventable man-made disasters like 9/11. But the fact is we don’t know what’s coming our way and one of the worst things can happen just when we aren’t looking or even expecting it.
It was a sad and shocking day for all of the world when the plains crashed into the twin towers and it left everyone with an unforgettable memory. Some one once said that everyone remembers exactly where they were and what they were doing when the 9/11 attacks happen. And today, 10 years later, we are gathering to remember the fallen ones and pray for their families and friends and remember the feeling of loss and sorrow. In our prayers we ask for hope and strength to continue with our lives, and never to forget the bravery of those who were there to help.
History be damned if it is but a repetition of our past. But if there is any truth to it, then what are we to expect next? Should we even hope for a better future without the fear that another tyrant will not rise in the west to “cleanse” the world? Or a mad man who is willing to kill everyone who doesn’t share the same religious belief? History tends to leave its mark and gives us the opportunity to learn something from it. And maybe, after we have observed what it was trying to teach us, we can actually learn to avoid the mistakes we’ve made in our past.
History be damned if it is but a collection of failures for humanity. And it is not the history that we should look to now but our present actions that will determine what we are to see in our future. If I’ve learned anything from history is the fact that we are capable of change and betterment. The question I ask myself thou, are we learning from our pasts and our history? Or do we still need more unforgettable events to learn what we need to do. I cannot speak for the world, but I am looking forward to the future. What ever that might be.
